Review
Ravi (Srikanth) is in lookout for money to bailout his father who is in jail. Ravi wants to cheat people to earn money. Chandu (JD Chakri) is a seasoned conman who doesn’t differentiate between family members and outsiders in the business of cheating. Ravi wants to learn the tricks of trade from Chandu. Chandu gets his hands on a big plan which will make him a multi-millionaire over night. The rest of the story is about plotting a scheme to make a big kill.

JD Chakravarthy’s character has lot of dialogues in godavari dialect and he is okay. Srikanth is good as an underplaying conman. Lucky Sharma has some of the features of Deeksha Seth (height is not one of them). She is attractive. Anisha Singh is limited to songs. The inspector-constable series started by EVV with 420 film is still a selling point. Raghu Babu and Raghu Karumanchi are good in the roles of cops. Shakuntala is funny in the role of don’s mother who is obsessed with shers(shayari). Pradeep Rawat plays a key role. Brahmananam is ineffective as Savitri. There is a great comic character inside Brahmaji and he makes sure that he has something to contribute in entertainment section in whichever film he works for.

This film is a remake of a Malayalam film titled Gulumaal, which heavily inspired by an Argentine film ‘Nine Queens’ (Nueve Reinas - 2000). This is a typical Priyadarshan kind of script and it takes amazing comic timing from the director to make it work. Director JD Chakri couldn’t get it right in establishing characters in an impact making way. However, he has succeeded in getting a couple of threads (cops episode and Telangana Sakuntala episode) in entertaining way. The screenplay and run-time of the film appears prolonged due to the nature of the subject. Stories of this kind doesn’t need songs and excessive runtime. The terrorist part of the film looks funny (it's supposed to be serious).

However I see a major blunder in “All The Best” in terms of logic. In the original film, they sell vintage postal stamps (nine stamps featuring the photos of queens). Since it has an antique value, once can have a personal transaction. But in Telugu version they off a piece of land, which requires a big procedure at government’s registration office in person to get the transaction done. But showing seasoned cons selling land by exchanging registration papers in a hotel room over night is a big flaw.

This film is low on production values as entire film is shot in minimal budget in and around Rajahmundry. Cinematography is okay. Dialogues are sufficient. Hema Chandra’s music is not upto the mark.

All The Best film belong to a rare genre (con films) in Telugu film industry. Films of these nature need to be crisp. Con films do generally end up with a brilliant stroke towards the climax. One can savour such a climax only if the rest of the film is narrated in an interesting manner. The film has every thing in right place, but the director’s inability get the timing right marred the over all impact of the movie.

Review
Story
During the colonial times, Shahid Khan (Jaideep Ahlawat) was working in the coal mine owned by Ramadhir Singh (Tigmanshu Dhulia). Ramadhir kills Shahid and Shahid’s son Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpayee) vows to take revenge. Sardar Khan’s intention is not to kill Ramadhir, but to slowly humiliate him and there by killing his pride and self respect. Sardar becomes the most dreaded and influential man in that region. He has two wives and four children. kids grow up and start working for their father. One son gets married and another son goes to jail. Suddenly something happens.
Actors:
Manoj Bajpayee essayed his role so well that you will not differentiate between the character and the actor. Only few actors can make us feel that way. He becomes the character Sardar and the Sardar character becomes Manoj Bajpayee. Richa Chadda plays her character with a firebrand energy. Reema Sen played her role to perfection with limited dialogues. She has put on a bit of weight for the role of a Bengali damsel in distress. Nawazuddin Siddiqui who did the role of son of Sardar is promising in the role of a youngster who models himself in the lines of Amitab Bachchan. Yashpal Sharma did the cameo of a funny-looking singer (like the Emosanal Athyachar stage singers). Debutant actor Tigmanshu Dhulia acted like a senior pro in the villain’s role. Debutant actress Huma Qureshi is introduced towards the end of the movie. She looks good and is likely to play a major role in the part 2.
Story - screenplay - direction: How can one write about story and screenplay if half of the film is shown? One can’t really comment on story and screenplay at this point of time because the dots will be connected and the links will be established in the part 2. We have new characters being introduced during the last minutes of part 1. Direction of the film is brilliant. Each character has lot of depth and is carefully designed. Each and every scene in the film is connected to the main story. There is rawness in the movie. You don’t love any character and you don’t hate any character.
The following scenes/sequences are extremely good
1. Sardar giving warning in a mike to villain when a girl is kidnapped (the entire set up of a jeep, pelvic thrusting Mithun look-alike and cool warning words)
2. The entire romance thread between Sardar and Durga. (liked the way Durga hides her face when she realises that Sardar is mimicking her)
3. The complete thread involving gun-trader. There are three appearances of the gun-trader and interesting things happen each time.
4. Faizal’s love episode (the goggles episode as well as the one involving him touching girl’s hand)
5. The episodes involving first wife of Sardar where she goes to whorehouse in search of her husband and squabbling that happens over there.
6. The scene of Sardar escaping from the prison.
Influences: One can see clear influence of Godfather film in this movie. Here are a couple of scenes I observed -
1. Faisal hiding the guns in the lavatory of train. (Godfather)
2. An important character being shot at a petrol bunk. (Godfather)
3. Scene involving slaughterhouses (Gangs of New York)
4. Chopped finger and bloodshed (Quentin Tarantino films)
Other technical departments: Background music by GV Prakash is terrific and goes well with the different decades the story is representing. Songs scored by Sneha Khanwalker are good and are inserted into narration without disturbing the flow. Cinematography by Rajeev Ravi is of top-notch quality. There is a color theme to the film and its well executed. The locations and rustiness adds to the cinematography. Dialogues are terrific though there are ample cuss-words. Editing is perfect.
Analysis: I still remember the days when I watched Kill Bill in a theater. I was pretty much disappointed that the story is not over and we have to wait for a few months before watching the second half. It’s been 8/9 years Kill Bill was released. And we got used to such formats over a period of time. The recent one being our own Rakta Charitra. The first half of any film is generally devoted for establishing the characters and setting up the plot. Since GOW 1 is about establishing characters and setting up the plot, we can’t complain. The plus points of the films are perfect casting, dialogues, cinematography, music, earthly set-up and direction. On the flip side, the run-time of the movie, bloodshed, excessive cuss words and detailed description of unlimited characters might make audiences restless. I personally liked the movie. GOW 1 may not be the film for aam junta, but is a definite watch for serious and coming-of-age film lovers.

Review

Story

Lucky (Tanish) is a middle-class college going student. Dil (Niti Taylor) is a Muslim girl hailing from old city. Lucky falls in love with Dil and she has no feeling for him. She starts realising that she is in love with Lucky only after she gets engaged to another guy. She want to carry on with engagement and wedding because she loves her family. The rest of the story is all about what happens when she asks Lucky to take her away at a weak moment.

Artists Performance

It is a serious script for an upcoming actor like Tanish and he justifies the role with right performance. He should seriously consider working on his weight. He has also shown lot of difference between the two get-ups (flashback and pondicherry). Nitin Taylor suited the role of Muslim girl very well and her character has a lot of complexity. She has carried her meaty character with elan. Madalsa Sharma is good as a christian girl Kushi. Surya, Sana, Kasi Viswanath and Rama Prabha are good. Snigdha gets another impressive and tomboyish role after Ala Modalaindi. Mahabub Bhasha is excellent as the auto driver-friend of hero. Bhagyaraja plays a important role of a guy who listens to the story.

Technical departments

Story - screenplay - direction: The basic premise of this film is like any other love story. What separates this story from the rest of the formulaic stories is the maturity shown towards the end. The director has also written the screenplay in a flashback mode. There is an intensity in the love between the lead couple in the second half. But having such intense and continuous love thread is risky in Telugu films as audiences primarily look for a bit of entertainment in love stories too. The love scenes between the couple till the make a decision to elope may appear repetitive. The characterization of heroine also reflects the vacillating moods of women in real life when it come to important and life changing issues. There are couple of impact making scenes like auto-driver encouraging elopement and father of heroine giving heroine a free hand about deciding about future. There is honesty and intent to make a different cinema in the work of new director Trinadh Rao.

Other departments: Music is a big plus to the movie. All songs are good (though most of them are heard-before signature tunes of Sekhar Chandra). I had been waiting for the song Vellipove right from and beginning and it is well placed at the crucial stage of the story. Dialogues by Nivas are good. Cinematography Sai Sriram is okay considering that it is made with a digital camera. Lyrics by Bhaskarabhatla deserve a mention. The producers should be appreciated for investing on a story that is realistic.

Analysis: First half of the film is interesting. The major part of second half (mainly due to see-saw attitude of heroine character) looks little slow. The last few minutes of the film scores due to a differentiating factor. Mem Vayasuku Vacham is a film that is different from the routine love stories we get in Telugu films. It is realistic, partly entertaining and honest.

Note: Though this film qualifies to be a 'multiplex film', it didn't even manage to get a single show in multiplexes of Hyderabad. Quite sad!

Oka Romantic Crime Katha movie review

Credits

Punchline: love, sex, mms, abortion, facebook friendship, dhoka & murder
Genre: Crime/Romance
Type: Straight
Banner: Sravya Films

Cast: Manoj Nandam, Sai Anil, Gayatri, Divya Swapna, Bobby

Music: Praveen Immadi
Cinematography: Sabu James
Story - screenplay - direction: P Suneel Kumar Reddy
Producer: Yekkali Ravindra Babu
Release date: 15 June 2012

Review
There are three girls who meet regularly at a bus-stop while alighting bus to their schools/colleges. Tanmayi (Gayatri) is doing 10th class, Anjali (Divya Swapna) is doing her +2 and Veena (Bobby) is doing her engineering. Tanmayi is from a lower middle class. Anjali is from a rich family but parents are too busy to give her time/affection. Veena is from a middle class. Veena girl falls in love with a dubious guy Kiran (Sai Anil) who calls himself as a ‘short filmmaker’, secretly shoots live sex scenes and blackmails them. Tanmayi falls in love with Sanjay (Manoj Nandam). He really loves her and can do anything for her. He turns into a chain-snatcher and then into a murderer for her. The rest of the story is all about how things go wrong and what they learn in their lives.

Most of the cast in this film is new. Hence you see characters. Though a few of them are amateurish, it adds freshness. Manoj Nandam gets the major portion in the film and he justifies. Divya Swapna looks beautiful among female leads and Bobby does well in acting department.

Director Sunil Kumar Reddy has always been selecting good and socially relevant subjects, but has been failing with uninteresting narration (Prayatnam and Sontha Vooru, for example). This subject is interesting and contemporary. Since it deals with teenage and adolescence, there are certain scenes and dialogues that are titillating (one girl asking another girl: share auto lo baga massage cheyinchukunnava, 10th class girl keeping a bun in bra and looking at mirror etc). The director has chosen a taboo subject in Telugu cinema which deals stuff like teenage sex, teenage abortions and sex mms. Some of the scenes in the film are bland (especially abortion by RMP doctor). The justification given for the killer to become one is not strongly established (about why he hates system and his justification for 8 killings). Sunil Reddy didn’t get it right in this film.

This film is shot with digital camera. They might have used handheld camera (may be Canon 5D) in certain scenes like bike chases. Dialogues are realistic and raw at times. Cinematography is adequate. They used graphics in songs which are completely unnecessary. The songs in this film disturbs the narration as there is no need. Music is okay.

Oka Romantic Crime Story subject is made with good intent. But the rawness in narration and uninteresting screenplay make you uncomfortable. The only difference between the films directed by Sunil Kumar Reddy in the past and this film is sex. There is nothing wrong in taking up taboo subjects. But one should narrate it in a mellowed and interesting way to make people appreciate it.

Adhinayakudu Movie Review

Nandamuri Balakrishna’s powerful action drama ‘Adhinayakudu’ has hit the screens today and the film is being watched keenly for its supposed political overtones. Paruchuri Murali has directed this movie and Lakshmi Rai is the heroine. ‘Adhinayakudu’ has been produced by M.L.Kumar Chowdhary and Kalyani Malik is the music director. Let us see how the movie is.
Story :
Balakrishna portrays three characters in this movie – Harischandra Prasad (old man) , Rama Krishna Prasad (bearded man) and Bobby (younger Balayya). Harischandra Prasad is a powerful leader from Rayalaseema and he has the love of the people. In order to provideemployment to the people of the area, Harikrishna Prasad plans to bring in a major steel plantwith the help of foreign investors. This is resented by powerful rival factionists Ramappa (Pradeep Rawat) and Kota Srinivasa Rao. So they hatch a plan to finish off Harischandra Prasad. Coming to know about this, Rama Krishna Prasad thwarts the plans of the villains and tries his best to follow his father’s footsteps.
But in a cruel twist, the villains strike at the heart of the family by manipulating Bobby. How do they do it? What is the twist? And will the family succeed in its attempt to empower the Rayalaseema region? That forms the story.
Plus Points :
When given powerful characters with punch dialogues, Balakrishna excels and same is the case here. His performances as the old man and the bearded Rama Krishna Prasad is very good. In both these roles, Balakrishna has given a restrained and composed performance.
Lakshmi Rai is there simply to provide the glamour quotient and she does this in ample measure. Saloni looks good but she is not a heroine in this movie. She simply makes an appearance in one song. Jayasudha is ok in the role of a mother.
Brahmanandam entertains very well as Brahmam. His  comedy track with Balakrishna has been etched out well and keeps the momentum going. Kota Srinivasa Rao does what is needed and Pradeep Rawat is good.
The interval episode and the second half of the film have some good punch dialogues that keep fans entertained. There is good pace throughout the film and the flashback scenes have been handled pretty well. There are ample commercial elements in the movie for C Center crowds.
The crucial twist in the story is good.
Minus Points :
Care should have been taken with respect to the wigs and costumes of a big hero like Balakrishna and the Director is completely at fault here. Except for the old man’s character, the wigs and costumes are not apt and the director should have ensured a better output. The romantic track between Balakrishna and Lakshmi Rai is also quite superficial.
The characterization of villains is quite poor and they do not have a very central role to play in the film. For a powerful drama to unfold, a strong villain is essential and this is missing here.
Venu Madhav and Murali Sharma are wasted in silly roles. Aditya Menon and Ravi Prakash have very insignificant roles. The father and son conflict angle is very interesting, but it could have been handled a lot better. There is no emotional conviction in the conflict. Some of the narration techniques are very outdated. The placement of songs in the first half could have been better.
Technical Aspects :
Cinematography is very average and there are no great visuals here. Editing is poor and mars the flow of the film. Dialogues are good, especially the ones written for Harischandra Prasad’s character and Rama Krishna Prasad’s character.
Kalyani Malik’s background score is very good and it elevates the movie during key scenes. Music for the songs is average though.
Paruchuri Murali has shown promise in a few areas, like elevating the hero’s image. But he messed up completely in the costumes, look and screenplay department. Dances and fights are just about ok.
Verdict :
Adhinayakudu is a trademark Balakrishna entertainer and the movie has elements which fans and movie lovers expect from Balayya. Some good punch dialogues and a decent comedy track keep things interesting. Poor costumes and improper characterization for the key roles in the story are glaringly obvious. On the whole, Adhinayakudu is a reasonably decent one time watch if you want a masala entertainer this weekend. As for the movie’s Box Office range, it depends on how B and C center crowds respond.
Rating : 3/5
